Holding On to Faith Through Times of Difficulty

By Dr. Floyd Godfrey

Life inevitably brings seasons of hardship. Whether we experience grief, illness, broken relationships, financial strain, or unexpected loss, these moments often challenge our confidence and leave us wondering where God is in the midst of our pain. Yet Scripture consistently reminds us that faith is not the absence of suffering. Rather, faith is the confidence that God remains present, loving, and purposeful, even when life feels overwhelming.

Many Christians experience periods when God's presence seems distant. Gaultiere and Gaultiere (2021) describe these seasons by writing, "In times of desolation, blessed feelings evaporate and God seems far away" (p. 47). Nearly every believer encounters moments when prayer feels difficult and spiritual joy seems absent. During these times, our emotions may tell us that God has withdrawn, but the truth of Scripture assures us that He never abandons His children.

It is also important to recognize the difference between spiritual desolation and clinical depression. While the two can influence one another, they are not the same experience. As Gaultiere and Gaultiere (2021) explain, "Desolation is different from being depressed, although the two affect each other. Depression is a psychological problem that darkens our whole personality and life, including our relationship with God and spiritual activities" (p. 47). Understanding this distinction helps Christians respond wisely. Spiritual struggles may require renewed dependence upon God, while depression may also require professional support, medical care, and compassionate encouragement from others.

One of the greatest encouragements for believers is knowing that difficult seasons are not evidence of God's displeasure. Feelings of emptiness or discouragement do not mean we have failed spiritually. Gaultiere and Gaultiere (2021) offer this comforting reminder: "When you're in desolation it's not because you did anything wrong. It's not because you lack faith" (pp. 47-48). These words help remove the unnecessary guilt that many Christians carry when they endure painful seasons. God does not measure our faith by our emotions. His love remains constant, even when our feelings fluctuate.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God often uses suffering to accomplish purposes we cannot immediately understand. Painful experiences frequently become opportunities for spiritual growth, deeper dependence upon Him, and stronger character. Although we would rarely choose hardship, God faithfully works through it to shape us into people who reflect His heart more fully. As Paul reminds believers, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Rom. 8:28, NIV). This promise does not suggest that every circumstance is good. Rather, it assures us that God is able to redeem even our deepest pain for His greater purposes.

God's loving presence remains one of the greatest comforts during difficult times. We are never expected to walk through suffering alone. The Lord walks beside us, strengthening us when our own strength fails. Even when we cannot see what He is doing, He remains faithfully present. The psalmist beautifully expresses this truth: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me" (Ps. 23:4, NIV). God's presence often becomes most evident as we continue trusting Him through seasons that seem uncertain.

As believers continue walking with Christ, difficult experiences often become testimonies of His faithfulness. Many discover that the trials they once feared eventually deepen their compassion, strengthen their trust, and prepare them to encourage others facing similar struggles. God rarely wastes our pain. Instead, He lovingly transforms suffering into opportunities for spiritual maturity and ministry.

Holding on to faith during hardship is not about pretending everything is fine. It is about choosing to trust God's character even when circumstances remain difficult. His love never changes, His presence never leaves us, and His purposes continue unfolding beyond what we can presently see. As we persevere through seasons of pain, we can rest in the confidence that God is shaping our character, strengthening our faith, and drawing us ever closer to Himself.
