Desperation Reveals Dependence on God

By Dr. Floyd Godfrey

There are moments in life when everything we thought we had under control begins to unravel. Plans fail, relationships strain, health falters, and certainty disappears. These desperate situations often arrive uninvited, shaking the very foundation of our confidence. Yet, in these painful and uncertain moments, something profound can happen. We begin to recognize what has always been true, that our lives were never fully in our control to begin with.

Human nature leans heavily toward the illusion of control. We make plans, set goals, and structure our lives in ways that give us a sense of stability and predictability. This is not inherently wrong, but it can quietly evolve into self-reliance that pushes God to the margins. We may acknowledge Him in word, yet live as though outcomes ultimately depend on our own strength, wisdom, and effort. It is easy to believe we are steering the course of our lives when circumstances cooperate with our desires.

However, when life takes an unexpected turn, that illusion is exposed. Desperation has a way of stripping away our confidence in ourselves. It confronts us with our limitations and reminds us that we are not as self-sufficient as we imagined. In these moments, we are often drawn back to a posture of humility, recognizing our deep need for God’s guidance, provision, and care.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God allows difficult and painful situations not to harm us, but to redirect our hearts. Trials have a way of capturing our full attention. When everything else falls away, we begin to seek Him more earnestly. Prayer becomes more sincere, dependence becomes more real, and faith becomes less theoretical and more personal. What once felt like routine belief transforms into a living reliance on the Lord.

It is important to understand that God is never absent in our suffering. He is not scrambling to respond to chaos, nor is He surprised by our circumstances. He remains sovereign over all things, even when our lives feel out of control. What appears to us as disorder is still under His authority. In His wisdom, He can use even the most painful experiences to accomplish purposes beyond our immediate understanding.

Desperation, while uncomfortable, can become a sacred space where we encounter God more deeply. When we reach the end of our own strength, we are finally in a position to fully rely on His. This is where faith grows, not in the ease of control, but in the surrender of it. Letting go of the need to manage every outcome allows us to rest in the truth that God is already at work.

There is also a refining aspect to these seasons. They expose where we have placed our trust and reveal the areas where we have depended more on ourselves than on God. This is not meant to shame us, but to invite us into a deeper relationship with Him. As we release our grip on control, we learn to trust His character, His timing, and His plan.

In the end, desperate situations can serve as powerful reminders that God has always been at the helm. What we perceive as loss of control is often an invitation to return to the One who truly holds all things together. In surrender, we do not lose security, we find it in its truest form.
